The VIX jumped above 20 on Wednesday as the stock market’s slide worsened.
The Dow fell 563 points, or 1.3%. The S&P 500 was down 1.3%. The Nasdaq Composite was down 2.1%.
The VIX, known as the market’s fear gauge, jumped 11.4% to 20.27. Any reading of 20 or above is considered heightened volatility. Stocks have been falling this week as bond yields jumped higher.
The yield on the 2-year Treasury yield was up to 4.084%. The 10-year yield was up to 4.242%.
Only 131 S&P 500 stocks were up, while all but three Dow stocks were falling.
The S&P and Dow reached record closes on Friday. Since then, the uptick in yields, worries about the election, and shifting rate-cut expectations have weighed on stocks and bond prices.
Stocks also fell sharply on Monday and Tuesday before rallying off their lows. We’ll see if the stock market can do the same today.
