Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: The Nifty 50 closed below the 22,800 mark for the first time since June 5, 2024, settling at 22,796, down 117 points. The Sensex also slipped 425 points to 75,311, while the Nifty Bank dropped 353 points to 48,981. The broader markets followed suit, with the Midcap index plunging 648 points to close at 50,486.
The Nifty Auto index emerged as the worst performer of the day, dragged by a steep 7% drop in Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), marking its sharpest decline in seven months. The index has now closed in the red in 11 of the last 13 sessions. PSU bank stocks witnessed profit booking, with Punjab National Bank (PNB) and IDBI Bank losing nearly 2% each.
For the week, the benchmark indices posted losses for the second straight week, though the midcap segment managed to outperform. The auto and pharma sectors were the worst performers, weighed down by concerns over potential trade tariffs under a possible Trump administration. The Nifty FMCG index fell nearly 2% for the week, reflecting weak consumption trends. On the other hand, the Nifty Metal index surged over 5%, supported by optimism around a potential US-China trade agreement.
