Employability focus as MSP Capital hosts young carers

Eight young people with care responsibilities have gained first-hand insight about work in the property finance sector on a visit to MSP Capital.

The group, aged 13 to 23, visited various departments at the Poole-based lender to learn how funding solutions help turn housing development proposals into projects on the ground.

The ‘employability’ day was organised by the MYTIME Young Carers charity in partnership with MSP Capital’s Community Committee.

For the visitors, it was the culmination of a nine-week MYTIME programme looking at skills, careers and pathways into the world of work.

After a tour of the office, they were given presentations by various MSP Capital team members.

They spoke about their educational and career journeys to date, their roles at MSP Capital, how their departments operate, and the skills needed to do their jobs.

Responding to questions from the visitors, they also shared ideas around career progression and acquiring skills for the workplace.

The presenters were Adam Tovey, Director of Risk and Underwriting, Rachel Bartlett, Head of Marketing & People, Elliot Phelps, Senior Software Developer, Chris Wright, Associate Director of Valuation, and Maddie Young, HR Administrator.

The visit was arranged under MSP Capital’s ESG strategy Foundations for Better Futures which has a focus on help for local communities and charities.

Founded in 2018 and based at Avonbourne School in Bournemouth, MYTIME Young Carers provides safe spaces, respite breaks and other support for five-to-25-year-olds who juggle care responsibilities at home with school, college or work.

As well as helping individual carers directly, MYTIME works with schools, local authorities and communities to increase support and understanding of young carers and their needs.

The charity’s employability programme features courses for young carers aged 16-19, aimed at providing them with guidance and support for taking up employment, further education or training.
