Trio of Inverness art venues collaborate to celebrate Gaelic culture with new exhibition

A range of works from artists inspired by the Gaelic language, culture and a connection to the land is set to feature in a multi-site exhibition in Inverness between January and March.

‘Buaile’ – a collaboration between Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, Eden Court Galleries and Wasps’ Inverness Creative Academy – presents the work of 20 artists from across Scotland who create their individual work processes through a Gaelic perspective.

Kirsten Body is the Visual Arts Programme Curator at High Life Highland’s Inverness Museum and Art Gallery.

She explained: “Buaile has been made possible thanks to the generous support of Maoin nan Ealan Gàidhlig (Gaelic Arts Fund) which has enabled us to bring together a new generation of artists from across the Highlands and Islands, as well as undertake school workshops alongside the exhibitions.

“We are delighted at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery to have the works of eight fantastic artists on display from January 25 until March 22 as part of this celebration of Gaelic culture.”

Richard Bracken, Rhona Dougall, Shaun Fraser, Mairi Gillies, Mhairi Killin, Calum MacKinnon Ferguson, Danielle MacLeod and Raghnaid Sandilands are all featured in the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery exhibition.

Their work takes a place-based approach, grounded by Gaelic culture and exploring landscape, degrowth and decolonial history within their own practice.

At Eden Court’s Chapel Gallery there is an installation of work by Glasgow based artist Kayleigh Sarah McGuinness, which will run during Seachdain na Gàidhlig (World Gaelic Week February 24 – March 2) as well as work by Eilidh MacKenzie, Angela NicIllebhraighe, Déirdre Ní Mhathùna, Ró Ó hEadhra, Eire Richards and Fiona Stewart from January 25 until March 2.

Over the same period, Inverness Creative Academy will be displaying the work of Yasmin Davidson, Victoria Caine, David Hutchison and Angela MacMillan.

Emily NicDhòmhnaill, Gaelic Projects Manager at Eden Court said: “Eden Court is delighted to collaborate for the first time with Inverness Creative Academy and High Life Highland’s Inverness Museum and Art Gallery on this exciting new multi-venue Gaelic art exhibition.

“The sharing of skills, resources, experience and enthusiasm has been essential in creating the ‘Buaile’ exhibition.

“Gaelic language and culture is an essential part of our work here at Eden Court and we are so pleased to be able to provide artists whose work offers a Gaelic perspective the opportunity to showcase this unique perspective and to discover new artists who we hope to work with again in the future.”

Furthermore, on Thursday, February 27 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, Inverness Creative Academy will host an evening of conversations – chaired by Raghnaid Sandilands – with ‘Buaile’ exhibiting artists taking part, followed by live music.

Simultaneous translation will be provided by Fèisean nan Gàidheal ensuring the event is fully inclusive to anyone with an interest.
