CLARENDON College students have really done their homework when it comes to “Inspired By” – the new exhibition at the Astley Cheetham Art Gallery, Stalybridge.
It is the product of a collaborative project where they responded creatively to the gallery’s collection.
Over a 10-week period of development and refinement, the students chose a work which they then researched along with the artist. They studied the item itself, its history and context, and then experimented with materials and processes.
Among the featured works are “Ship on Fire”, painted by James Francis Danby in 1873, “Daffodils” by Mark Gertler (c1914) and Wendy Raphael’s “Clown” from the 1980s.
The college art courses taking part are the level 3 BTEC extended diploma in art, design and practice and A-level art and design.
Cllr Sangita Patel, Tameside Council’s assistant executive member for heritage, culture and digital inclusivity, said: “It must have been an exciting and rewarding experience for the Clarendon College students to be able to work so closely with the Astley Cheetham Gallery and have the opportunity to exhibit locally.
“They have put in a great deal of hard work and the result is an excellent exhibition which I would strongly encourage people to view. I’m sure they’ll find ‘Inspired By’ to be very inspirational.”
The Astley Cheetham Art Gallery is on Trinity Street, Stalybridge, above the library. Its opening hours are: Mondays and Tuesdays, 9am to 1pm; Wednesdays, 1 to 5pm; Saturdays, 10am to 3pm.
